What: 8 week mindfulness practice course for health care professionals. Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) was developed by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn (Author of Full Catastrophe Living, Wherever You Go There You Are) at the University of Massachusetts School of Medicine. This course uses the McGill Whole Person Care model which adapts MBSR specifically for health care professionals. The program is designed to foster well-being in health care professionals by providing tools which will help them respond more effectively to stress. Participants will have the opportunity to develop skills in a range of mindfulness practices through intensive training and meditation, in-class discussion and home assignments. The focus will be in the integration of mindfulness practice into the challenges of daily life and clinical work.
Who: The course is limited to 17 Health Care Professionals involved in direct patient care. Participation is recommended for anyone interested in finding more skillful ways to meet the high performance demands of their profession and personal lives. Course participation and discussions are confidential. Future courses will be offered for managers and administrative staff if there is interest.
When: Classes for the 8 week course are held from 1pm to 3:30pm on Thursdays from March 8, 2012 to April 26, 2012. The course includes a 6 hour retreat (date to be confirmed).
Where: Weekly course sessions will be held in Spirituality Centre, 2nd Floor at the ROHMC. Participants should bring pillows, blanket, water bottle, and loose comfortable clothing for each session. Each participant will be given a workbook, meditation CDs and a mat.
Fee for Community Mental Health Professionals: $ 650.
Fee for Staff of The Royal: $ 250.

Teachers:
Gail McEachern has a Masters Degree in Social Work from McGill University, and is a member of the Ontario College of Social Workers. Ms. McEachern has trained in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) with the University of Massachusettes School of Medicine and the Center for Mind-Body Medicine in Washington, DC. She has co-instructed MBSR at McGill University’s Programs for Whole Person Care, and the Ottawa Mindfulness Clinic. For the past 14 years she has been the Director of Transitions in Living, helping people make positive changes in their lives.
Dr. Kim Sogge, C.Psych. has a Ph.D. from the APA accredited program in Counseling Psychology at Texas A&M University, a Masters Degree in Education from McGill University, and is a registered member of the College of Psychologists of Ontario. Dr. Sogge completed her doctoral residency in the innovative Behavioral Health track at the University of Texas at Austin, and her post doctoral work in the PTSD Unit of the Olin Teague Veterans Administration Hospital in Temple, Texas. Dr. Sogge has trained in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) with the University of Massachusetts School of Medicine and has co-instructed MBSR classes for students at the University of Texas at Austin, for parents and children experiencing chronic illness at the Alberta Childrens Hospital, and in public and private health clinics in Ontario. She has presented on mindfulness for health care professionals at the Texas A&M College of Medicine, at the American Psychological Association Annual Convention, and at the World Conference for Contextual Behavioral Science. She supports mindfulness practice for healthcare professionals as a means to increasing resilience to workplace stress, and to cultivating compassion in the delivery of health care to patients.
