Position: Social Worker II
Temporary Full-Time (1.0 FTE) (up to October 2012)
Program: Integrated Forensics Program, Champlain, Assessment Unit
Location: Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre

Duties:

  • Work collaboratively, cooperatively and effectively within the Integrated Forensic Program, Champlain.
  • Complete bio-psycho-social assessments, risk assessment and crisis intervention plans.
  • Conduct group, family and individual counselling and therapy.
  • Provide education and treatment to clients and family.
  • Ensure Ontario Review Board disposition conditions are adhered through clinical supervision and assistance.
  • Communication of information related to clinical need, risk assessment and clinical strategies with the interdisciplinary team.
  • Engage family and significant others in the clinical interventions and risk reduction strategies with the interdisciplinary team.
  • Meet with clients as directed by Ontario Review Board and clinical team.
  • Communicate as directed with the Ontario Review Board.
  • Liaise with the Ottawa Police Services.
  • Liaise, consult and work collaboratively with community service providers.
  • Provide evidence to the Ontario Review Board as requested or directed at NCR patient annual hearings.
  • Provide educational presentations to community groups.
  • Conduct “Approved Person Assessments” according to Ontario Review Board and Hospital standards.
  • Liaise with Regional Municipality of Ottawa-Carleton supportive living service workers regarding client transition in supervised living residences.
  • Maintain work load measurement and data collection as required.
  • Maintain current knowledge of best practices and standards of Social Work by reviewing literature, attending educational events, networking with colleagues, etc.
  • Engage actively in relevant Program, Social Work, hospital and community committees including academic (education and research), advocacy and system development as required.
  • Keep current with hospital policies and procedures and applicable legislation and timelines
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Work in a manner that is in compliance with staff and patient/client safety practices, policies and procedures of the ROHCG.
  • Ensure a work environment that is conducive to the ROHCG Respectful Workplace policy.

Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in Social Work with a minimum of 2-3 years clinical Social Work experience in a mental health setting
  • Current registration in good standing with the Ontario College of Social Workers & Social Service Workers
  • Experience in providing services and reports in forensic/court related matters is preferred
  • Experience in providing evidence to courts or related proceedings is preferred
  • Extensive knowledge about risk assessment, treatment of mentally disordered offenders, and risk management strategies
  • Understanding and knowledge of legislation related to mentally disordered offenders, i.e. Criminal Code of Canada (Mental Disorder Provisions), Provincial Mental Health Act
  • Knowledge of precedent cases (related to Mental Disorder Provision of Criminal Code) decided by the Supreme Court of Canada affecting future decisions and management of mentally disordered offenders
  • Advanced crisis intervention skills based on application of formal risk and clinical assessment
  • Knowledge and experience in Illness Management and Recovery Model
  • Conflict resolution knowledge related to challenging mentally disordered offender’s unacceptable behaviour and assisting the individual to make more appropriate choices.
  • Understanding of the treatment and management of mentally disordered offenders with a concurrent disorder (major mental illness and substance abuse).
  • Training and experience working with families.
  • Strong conflict resolution abilities
  • Excellent advocacy skills
  • Proven presentation, training and group facilitation skills an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently.
  • Effective team skills.
  • Ability to work in an automated work environment.
  • Valid Driver’s license
  • Access to a vehicle.
  • English level A- is mandatory in oral expression, comprehension, reading and writing. Bilingual (French/English) is considered an asset

Salary: $34.82 to $41.80 per hour
