The Royal is one of Canada’s foremost mental health treatment, teaching and research hospitals. Our goal is to expand access to mental health treatment and offer people living with complex and difficult-to-treat mental illness and addiction the opportunity to reclaim their lives from their conditions. Explore career opportunities at the Ottawa and Brockville campuses, and our satellite offices and clinics in Eastern Ontario.
We strive to make working at The Royal the best possible experience for everyone who chooses mental health care for their career. We offer competitive pay and benefits as well as recognition programs, safety and wellness programs and a commitment to DEI as one of our core values.
Employees at The Royal receive a competitive salary and a comprehensive range of benefits. Our hospital has several different employee groups under various bargaining units and therefore has multiple (but similar) health plans.
Benefit plans include extended health care, dental and vision care, access to an excellent employee and family assistance program, as well as parental leave, sick leave, life insurance, accidental death and dismemberment insurance and long-term disability.
The Royal’s Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP) is a confidential 24/7 service that helps full-time and part-time employees and their immediate family members in assessing, supporting, and resolving a wide range of work, health and life issues.
We offer one of Canada’s best pension plans. We participate in the Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan (HOOPP), offering the future financial security and peace of mind that comes with a defined benefit pension plan. A strong pension, like HOOPP, recognizes our employees’ essential contributions and provides a stable foundation for their future as part of the overall compensation package.
Good Catch award: A monthly award presented to a Royal program/service, staff member, physician, volunteer, patient or family member who demonstrates a commitment to patient safety by identifying a near-miss incident through The Royal’s Client Staff Incident & Feedback (CSIF) system.
Royal awards: Great work deserves to be recognized. The annual Royal Awards ceremony is one of the ways we shine a spotlight on quality, innovation and education at The Royal.
Service awards: Employees, physicians and EllisDon employees are recognized for their years of service in five-year increments beginning at the five-year mark. Rewards include commemorative pins and certificates, depending on the milestone, as well as a choice of gifts.
Employee recognition week and annual staff BBQ: These celebrations recognize the dedication, commitment and care shown by all employees throughout the year. At the Ottawa campus, the BBQ is hosted by the Royal Boosters; in Brockville, by the Staff 4-U committee.
The Royal is committed to providing and maintaining a safe and healthy work environment and ensuring the well-being of all our staff. Our employee health and wellness programs include mental health first aid, safety/violence prevention and training, peer support, the Frontline Wellness Program, infection prevention and control programs (such as roving influenza clinics) and the Royal Wellness Institute, an expert-led internal initiative designed to support mental wellbeing among staff.
Building an inclusive, diverse and engaging work environment is a top priority for The Royal. Our goal is to ensure all our people feel they belong and are truly valued for the unique backgrounds and perspectives they bring to our thriving community. To accompany our robust policies related to anti-racism and anti-discrimination, we are currently embarking on several initiatives intended to advance equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI). We encourage all staff to learn more and become involved in EDI training, education and assessment opportunities, join our established EDI committee or contribute to one of our growing number of employee resource groups.
We offer positions in every facet of mental illness treatment. Nurses are our core. Psychologists plan, develop, deliver and evaluate treatments. Administrators keep everything running smoothly. See if we have a position for you. Browse our internal and external postings on their pages.
Launch your career in mental health with The Royal. We offer placements, residencies and fellowships in clinical and research areas across a range of specialties, including psychology, forensic psychiatry and outcome prediction.
We are one of Canada’s leading mental health treatment, teaching and research hospitals. We see the person, not the illness. We create space for patients to rediscover who they are apart from their illness and reclaim their agency and their lives.
All of our current job opportunities are posted online and we are unable to accept resumes or applications via email. If you are having issues with the online applications process, please review the FAQs below. If you still need help, reach out to human resources at (613) 722-6521 ext. 6104 or HR.HelpDesk@theroyal.ca.
Visit the Job opportunities page and use the Job Seeker tool to search for a job. Once you find a job, click “Apply.” Every time you apply for a position, you will need to add your resumé, enter your personal information, fill in all required fields and, if required, add your cover letter (not all positions require cover letters). Job seekers can submit a resumé without creating a username or password. Before applying, read the job posting carefully and create a resumé to highlight skills and experiences that relate to the job and its requirements.
Applicants are required to apply online as we do not accept hand-delivered or emailed applications.
Yes—you can apply to multiple job postings that interest you and match your skills, experience and qualifications.
New positions are posted twice per week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Unionized roles are posted for one (1) week internally and may also be posted externally if deemed difficult to fill. If a unionized position is not filled internally, it will be posted externally until the position is filled.
Non-union roles are posted until the position has been filled.
You can sign up for “Job Alerts” on our career site under “Job Seeker Tools.” Fill in your first name, last name, email, select the job categories you are interested in and click “Sign Up.”
Once you have submitted an application to a particular job posting, you will not be able to make edits or changes to that application. However, you can reach out to our human resources team at (613) 722-6521 ext. 6104, or by email at HR.HelpDesk@theroyal.ca to request changes.
We cannot accept online submissions beyond the posted deadline.
When you submit your application, you will see a confirmation message and receive a confirmation email indicating that it has been received.
Review of applications may take anywhere from six to eight weeks, or more, depending on the division/unit staffing needs. Due to the volume of applications, only those selected for an interview will be contacted directly via phone or email.
Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications of the posting to be eligible for further consideration. However, meeting the minimum qualifications does not automatically mean applicants will be interviewed. Many positions at The Royal Ottawa are unionized, which means there are collective agreements in place. The organization must consider applicants that are part of the bargaining units before recruiting applicants external to the organization. We encourage you to apply to every position in which you are interested and matches your experience, skills and qualifications, including temporary or casual positions.
Your application is only reviewed against the position you submitted it towards. You must apply separately for every position you are interested in. Occasionally, resumés are shared between hiring managers, but this is not guaranteed. Sign up for “Job Alerts” to stay informed about positions that fit your interests and qualifications.
All new hires must obtain either a criminal record check or vulnerable sector check as a pre-condition for employment. We will inform applicants during the recruitment process which record check is required.
For assistance, please contact the human resources team at (613) 722-6521 ext. 6104, or by email at HR.HelpDesk@theroyal.ca.

All applicants are required to submit three references. Two references must be from a manager or leader.

We are committed to being an accessible workplace, which includes preventing, identifying and removing barriers that impede an individual’s ability to work here. Requests for accommodation can be made at any stage of the recruitment process.
Please note: All applicants for any vacancies at The Royal must be fully vaccinated to be considered for any positions. Any new hires, prior to their first day of employment, will be required to provide proof that they have been fully vaccinated, or present supporting documentation of a valid exemption in accordance with the Ontario Human Rights Code.
We have discovered that other organizations are falsely claiming to accept applications on behalf of The Royal. The Royal, or any authorized organization that recruits for us, will never ask for money from you to review our job postings, to apply for a job, obtaining work permits or visas, or for special courses.
