Your rights as a caregiver include involvement in care decisions and access to information, education and support.

Caregivers play an important role in their loved one’s recovery.

At The Royal, caregivers are recognized as valued partners in care. Within the boundaries of confidentiality and consent, you have the right to respect, inclusion, and access to information and resources that support both you and your loved one.

You have the right to be treated with empathy, dignity, and respect in a safe, healing environment free of stigma.

You have the right to caring staff who understand that the whole family is impacted when a loved one is experiencing mental illness.

You have the right to be included in your loved one’s care and be informed of significant events in patient care, such as transitions or changes in responsibility.

You have the right to share relevant, accurate information and insights about the patient’s history, care and progress with the understanding that it may be included on the patient’s health record.

You have the right to ask questions and receive clear, direct responses.

You have the right to be offered an interpreter.

You have the right to a reliable and competent contact person to assist with systems navigation.

You have the right to information and guidance on symptom management and crisis intervention.

You have the right to information on community resources and how to access them.

You have the right to education and supports that can assist in coping with mental health challenges.

You have the right to express concerns and have them pursued in a safe and fair manner.

You have the right to express all of your feelings, both positive and negative, in a manner that will not harm others.
