Interventional Psychiatry is a rapidly evolving clinical subspecialty that uses specialized modalities and procedures, including brain stimulation and drug delivery, to provide rapid treatment for difficult-to-treat psychiatric disorders.
This fellowship in Interventional Psychiatry is designed to give trainees the knowledge and experience to confidently prescribe and administer brain stimulation treatments and other emerging treatments that fall under the Interventional Psychiatry umbrella, including procedure-based pharmacologic interventions such as ketamine therapy. The fellowship will also prepare fellows for an academic career through the provision of opportunities to teach and engage in research or scholarly activities during the fellowship.
Fellows will receive support and mentorship from experts in the program to identify their specific areas of interest within the field of Interventional Psychiatry and to develop their career path.
Fellows will have the opportunity to work with clinical supervisors at The Royal’s Mood and Anxiety Program, ECT service, TMS service, ketamine service and with The Ottawa Hospital (TOH) ECT service. In addition, fellows will have the opportunity to work with clinical supervisors at The Royal’s Neuromodulation Research Clinic, where there are ongoing rTMS clinical trials and other IPP-related trials. Fellows will be provided with teaching through case-oriented learning with individual supervisors and individual teaching sessions covering a variety of topics related to interventional psychiatry.
To be accepted, an applicant must meet the eligibility criteria of the University of Ottawa (uOttawa) Faculty of Medicine Post-Graduate Education Department. Fellows must abide by the rules and regulations set by the University of Ottawa, the Ontario Ministry of Health, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario and the Royal College of Physicians of Surgeons of Canada throughout the program.
Canadian Medical Graduates must hold a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada certification in psychiatry prior to starting their fellowship and be eligible for an unrestricted license to practice psychiatry in Ontario for the duration of the program. They must also demonstrate strong oral and written English skills and have a demonstrated interest in psychiatric disorders.
International Medical Graduates must also maintain an independent licence to practise psychiatry in Ontario for the duration of the program. They must also demonstrate strong oral and written English skills and have a demonstrated interest in psychiatric disorders.
