NFB & Minority Stress Fellowship

Postdoctoral fellow positions to study fMRI neurofeedback in PTSD and neural correlates of minority stress in intersectional LGBTQ2SAI+ and racialized communities.

Two Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) funded postdoctoral fellow positions are available in the Nicholson lab at the University of Ottawa/Atlas Institute for Veterans and Families (2-3 years). We are seeking highly motivated and talented researchers to join our multi-disciplinary team of neuroscientists, biophysicists and clinicians.

Postdoctoral fellows will collaborate with the team along two major research themes:

  • Real-time fMRI neurofeedback in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Neural correlates of minority stress among intersectional LGBTQ2SAI+ and racialized communities

Across both themes, there is abundant opportunity for postdoctoral fellows to help formulate research questions and guide experimental approaches. Opportunities exist for national and international scientific collaborations, with attendance at a wide variety of seminars, symposia and other organized meetings focused on topics in neuroscience, neuroimaging and psychiatry.

Key responsibilities

  • Participating in all aspects of fMRI data acquisition and analysis.
  • Developing, modifying, and executing fMRI analysis protocols and paradigms.
  • Conducting behavioural and clinical assessments with research participants, including qualitative interviews.
  • Preparing peer-reviewed publications for top-notch scientific journals and presenting research at major national and international conferences.
  • Mentoring graduate students.

Qualification and skills

  • A PhD or MD/PhD degree in Neuroscience, Biomedical Engineering, Biophysics, MR Physics or related fields.
  • Extensive experience with scientific computing, including but not limited to computational (Python, R, MATLAB) and statistical (AFNI, FSL, SPM) methods
  • Expertise in human brain imaging, including but not limited to fMRI and EEG.
  • Proven research experience in functional MRI analysis methods, e.g., resting-state functional connectivity, task fMRI, etc.
  • Expertise in advanced neuroimaging analysis techniques (e.g., machine learning, neural modelling) are highly desired, but not required.
  • Expertise in real-time fMRI and/or fMRI-based neurofeedback is highly desired, but not required. Experience with Turbo-BrainVoyageur (TBV) would be a strong asset.
  • Excellent academic credentials, including a strong publication record.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively and independently across multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Flexibility with regards to travel within Canada.
