The Department of Psychiatry at the University of Ottawa is proud to offer an accredited Residency Training Program in Forensic Psychiatry. All accredited Forensic Psychiatry training programs in Canada will be participating in the CaRMS match. To apply, please register through CaRMS.

Eligibility criteria

Applicants must be:

  • Eligible to write the RCPSC (Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada) examination in general psychiatry.
  • Eligible for an educational license through the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.
  • A Canadian citizen or landed immigrant.
  • An applicant who would meet the above requirements but who has completed medical school outside of North America will have a mandatory 5-year return of service commitment within Ontario if accepted into a MOH (Ministry of Health) funded position.

The Forensic Psychiatry Residency Training Program also has the capacity to accommodate self-funded applicants and other applicants for whom alternate sources of funding are available.

How to apply

For consideration of enrolment in this program, please submit the following to CaRMS:

  • A letter of intent.
  • A completed Record of Training.
  • A sample of writing (such as a medico legal report or a consultation in the English language).
  • Two blind letters of reference to be sent to the Program Director/Program Assistant directly.
  • An updated C.V.
  • LMCC Part I results.
  • Copy of your ITERS from your General Psychiatry training, as one PDF document.

The above must be submitted to CaRMS prior to the milestone deadlines.

Application review

All eligible applicants will have their file reviewed by the Residency Program Committee. A short list of applicants will be selected for interviews. The Residency Program committee will inform applicants of the results of the selection process.

All 8 FP subspecialty programs also adhere to the standard CaRMS milestone dates. For the fall 2024 application cycle, the CaRMS milestone dates are as follows:

  • July 11, 2024 (noon EST) – CaRMS Online opens for applicants
  • August 20, 2024 (12:05 EST) – File review opens for programs
  • August 31 to September 22, 2024 – National interview period
  • October 02, 2024 (at 2 PM EST) – Program rank order list deadline
  • October 23, 2024 (noon EST) – Match Day.

As well, all 8 FP subspecialty programs will be adhering to a standardized CaRMS process.
