About the Adult General Psychiatry Program

The Royal’s Adult General Psychiatry program provides specialized outpatient treatment for individuals aged 18-69 living with a range of mental health concerns, including mood, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive (and related), trauma (and stressor-related), and personality disorders.

Care is provided by a multi-disciplinary team that may include psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, nurses, and occupational therapists.

Our services

Services typically begin with a consultation with one of our psychiatrists.

After this assessment, our team will recommend the type of follow‑up care that best matches your needs — whether that’s short‑term support, medication management, or more specialized treatment options. Treatment recommendations will be shared with the referring provider to support ongoing care.

Our goal is to offer the right level of care at the right time, ensuring each person receives personalized, evidence‑based support throughout their treatment journey.

Most patients receive a thorough consultation to confirm a diagnosis and make evidence-based treatment recommendations, including medication and non-medication options.

Our approach emphasizes collaborative care. Patients’ perspectives, lived and living experiences are integrated into evidence-based treatment delivered by a multidisciplinary team with expertise in medical, psychological, social and vocational areas.

While some clients may access allied health services through the Adult General Psychiatry Program, ongoing care is the responsibility of the patient’s primary care provider.

We work closely with family physicians, community mental health agencies and other health care professionals to support continuity of care beyond The Royal.

Referrals

Eligibility

The Adult General Psychiatry Program supports individuals aged 18 to 69 who are experiencing challenges related to mood, anxiety, obsessive‑compulsive and related conditions, trauma‑ and stressor‑related disorders, or personality disorders.

Valid OHIP coverage is required, along with a referral from a physician or nurse practitioner who can provide ongoing follow‑up after discharge.

For additional services, including for youth and geriatric patients, visit our directory.

Make a referral

Access to the Adult General Psychiatry Program requires a referral from a physician or nurse practitioner.

Health care providers can refer an individual to this program using the Central Intake Referral Form. Please fax completed referral forms to the Central Intake Team at 613-798-2976.

Referral forms can also be completed and submitted through the Ocean eReferral platform. For more information about eReferral, email contact@ereferralontarioeast.ca.

Referrals are reviewed by The Royal’s Central Access and Flow service to confirm eligibility and identify the most appropriate service. The referring provider will be notified within two weeks about whether the referral has been accepted or declined, including the reason if it is not accepted. Patients may be contacted directly if additional information is needed to ensure the best service match.
