Working at The Royal

The Royal is one of Canada’s foremost mental health care, teaching, and research hospitals. Our goal is to expand access, hope, and new possibilities to people living with complex and difficult-to-treat mental health conditions and substance use disorders through the convergence of client- and family-oriented care, science, education, and lived expertise.

We serve communities across eastern Ontario through a variety of inpatient and outpatient programs in Ottawa, Brockville, and four satellite offices.

Total Rewards/Benefits

We take care of our employees by offering a competitive salary and a comprehensive range of health-care benefits. We have several employee groups under various bargaining units and therefore have multiple (but similar) health plans.

Benefit plans include extended health care, dental and vision care, access to an excellent employee and family assistance program, as well as parental leave, sick leave, life insurance, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and long-term disability.

The Royal’s Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP) is a confidential 24/7 service that helps full-time and part-time employees and their immediate family members in assessing, supporting, and resolving a wide range of work, health, and life issues.

We offer one of Canada's best pension plans. We are proud to participate in the Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan (HOOPP), offering our valued employees the security and peace of mind that comes with a defined benefit pension plan. We understand the importance of financial well-being and believe that a strong pension, like HOOPP, recognizes our employees and provides a stable foundation for their future as part of the overall compensation package. Join us and start building a future you can look forward to.

Employee recognition

Good Catch Award

The Royal’s monthly Good Catch Award is presented to a Royal program/service, staff member, physician, volunteer, client or family member who demonstrates their commitment to patient safety by identifying a near-miss incident through The Royal’s Client Staff Incident & Feedback (CSIF) system.

Royal Awards

Great work deserves to be recognized and everyone loves to give – or receive – a gold star. The annual Royal Awards ceremony is one of the ways we shine a spotlight on quality, innovation, and education at The Royal.

Royal Angels

The Royal Angel Program is a thoughtful way for our clients and families to say thank you to staff who go above and beyond to provide extraordinary care. They can honour a doctor, nurse, or other staff member who made a positive impact on their experience by sending a message to let them know that the special care given did not go unnoticed.

Service Awards

Events such as our annual service awards give us an opportunity to celebrate our colleagues who have built their careers at The Royal.

Employees, physicians, and EllisDon employees are recognized for their years of service in five-year increments beginning at the five-year mark.

Employees who have reached a milestone of 5–20 years of service receive a pin, a card signed by their manager, and a certificate.

Employees who reach a milestone of 25+ years receive a pin, a certificate, and a choice of gifts.

Employee appreciation week and annual staff BBQ

These annual celebrations are a way to recognize the dedication, commitment, and caring shown by all employees throughout the year. At the Ottawa campus, the BBQ is hosted by the Royal Boosters, in Brockville, by the Staff 4-U committee. The Royal is proud of its joyful atmosphere. Both groups organize special events, fundraisers, activities, and inter-office contests all year long.

Employee safety and wellness

The Royal is committed to providing and maintaining a safe and healthy work environment and ensuring the well-being of all our staff.

Our employee health and wellness programs include mental health first aid, safety/violence prevention and training, peer support, the Frontline Wellness program, infection prevention and control programs (such as roving influenza clinics) and the Royal Wellness Institute, an expert-led internal initiative designed to support mental wellness among staff.

Diversity and inclusion

Diversity, equity, and inclusion are not just buzzwords at The Royal. Building an inclusive, diverse, and engaging work environment is always top of mind. Our goal is to ensure all our people feel they belong and are truly valued for the unique backgrounds and perspectives they bring to our thriving community.

To accompany our robust policies related to anti-racism and anti-discrimination, we are currently embarking on several initiatives intended to advance equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI). We encourage all staff to learn more and become involved in The Royal’s ongoing EDI journey. This could include participating in numerous EDI trainings, education and assessment opportunities, joining our established EDI committee and/or contributing to one of our growing number of employee resource groups.
