This session is designed for individuals who have a family member, loved one, or other familiar person who is experiencing symptoms of mental illness and is resistant to seeking or accepting treatment.

By the end of this presentation, participants will have a deeper understanding of why some individuals experiencing symptoms of mental illness may resist treatment, as well as an overview of both their rights and the rights of their loved one under Ontario’s Mental Health Act. The session will also explore practical and compassionate ways to support a loved one who is struggling while maintaining personal boundaries and promoting hope and connection.

Key Objectives

Participants will:

  • Develop a clearer understanding of what mental health symptoms can look like and how they may impact daily life.
  • Gain insight into common reasons individuals may resist treatment for symptoms of mental illness.
  • Learn about the rights of individuals to refuse treatment as outlined under Ontario’s Mental Health Act.
  • Understand the rights and options available to families, loved ones, or familiar persons who are concerned about someone experiencing symptoms of mental illness.
  • Identify common barriers to supporting a person who is resistant to treatment and explore effective, compassionate strategies for engagement.
  • Gain practical tips for maintaining their own wellbeing and resilience while supporting a loved one.
  • Promote a strengths-based, compassion-focused approach to mental health and recovery.

About the presenters

Marian Green-Mondoux, MSW RSW

Social worker, The Royal’s Psychiatric Outreach Team

Marian Green-Mondoux is a registered social worker and psychotherapist with more than 15 years of experience in mental health, including the past six years at The Royal. She’s worked across a range of settings—from community-based mental health programs to hospital and psychiatric emergency departments, as well as offering trauma-focused psychotherapy. Marian’s approach is person-centered, trauma-informed, and anti-oppressive, with a focus on supporting and empowering people who experience systemic barriers and marginalization

Elle Sare, MSW RSW

Social worker, The Royal’s Psychiatric Outreach Team

Elle is a registered social worker, mom of two little ones and someone who has lived experience with mental illness challenges. She has almost 9 years’ experience on The Royal’s psychiatric outreach team. Elle specializes in trauma-informed, strengths-based and patient-centered care. Prior to her hospital role, she worked with the unhoused population, in several various community-based roles.
