Vanessa Gruben

Vanessa Gruben is a Full Professor in the Common Law Section of the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Law and Director of the Centre for Health Law, Policy and Ethics. One of Canada’s leading scholars in health law and policy, her research examines complex legal and ethical issues involving health artificial intelligence, assisted reproduction, harm reduction, organ donation and transplantation, and the regulation of health professionals.

Vanessa is the co-editor of Canadian Health Law and Policy and co-author of Families and the Law in Canada: Cases and Commentary. Her research has been supported by leading national funding organizations, and she regularly contributes her expertise to governments, healthcare organizations and advocacy groups.

A former law clerk at the Federal Court of Appeal and Supreme Court of Canada, Vanessa also practised litigation before entering academia. She serves as Board Chair of AMS Healthcare and as a Board member of the Canadian Health Coalition. Vanessa is a Trustee of The Royal and Chair of the Governance Committee, bringing extensive expertise in health law, ethics, public policy and governance to the Board.
