Research Focus

I study the interactions between music and mental health to develop evidence-based practices that can improve well-being for individuals and communities. In addition to championing ground-breaking research on music, a part of my role is bringing The Royal into the community, creating partnerships and meeting people where they’re at, in their own environment.

A Point of Pride

Here is what participants in our research are saying:

  • “Music sessions bring me joy … something I was no longer experiencing in my life.”
  • “Music session … gets me to connect with people. Since my husband died, I no longer go out and stay home all the time – I only go out for my music lessons.”

How I am Working to Make a Difference for Those Living with Mental Illness

We are exploring the connection between music and brain function, but it is premature to formulate recommendations for how and when to use music. We cannot simply say “music is beneficial for mental health”. Our research is looking at what works, for whom, for what conditions, and in what contexts.
