At The Royal, research is at the heart of everything we do. Our state-of-the-art facilities and interdisciplinary teams are advancing the understanding of mental illness and addiction, while developing innovative treatments that directly improve patient care.
Explore our specialized research facilities below.
The Royal's Brain Imaging Centre is a state-of-the-art research facility dedicated to advancing understanding of the brain and mental illness through cutting-edge neuroimaging. Home to Canada’s first tri-modal imaging platform, it combines MRI, PET, and EEG to capture a complete picture of brain structure, chemistry and activity—driving innovation in the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness.
The Sleep Research Clinic investigates how sleep affects mood, cognition and emotional regulation. Using an advanced sleep lab and specialized psychiatric expertise, we study complex sleep disorders and develop personalized interventions to support overall wellbeing.
The Neuromodulation Research Clinic is advancing the treatment of difficult-to-treat depression through innovative neuromodulation therapies, with a primary focus on repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS).
Specializing in ketamine treatment, the BMO Innovative Clinic for Depression offers fast-acting, evidence-based interventions for individuals whose depression or bipolar disorder hasn’t responded to standard therapies.
The Cognitive Health Research Clinic provides cognitive evaluation and evidence-based interventions for those with mental illness-related cognitive challenges. Trials in cognitive remediation, virtual reality and remote programs are helping patients improve functioning and quality of life.
The CNMDP allows researchers to study how mental, neurological and cardiovascular health intersect. Secure data-sharing accelerates discoveries and supports the development of new prevention, diagnostic and treatment strategies.
The Music and Mental Health Research Clinic tests community music programs to reduce anxiety, depression and social isolation. Programs are already improving mood, connection and outcomes while creating evidence to expand music-based interventions.
Using electroencephalogram (EEG), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET), the Clinical EEG and Neuroimaging Research Lab studies brain function in mental illness and evaluates interventions to tailor treatment. Focus areas include youth, depression, schizophrenia, ADHD and beyond—moving toward precision-based care.
Donations are essential to the advancement of research and the discovery of new, more impactful treatments for mental illness.
There are lots of ways to participate in research at The Royal. Take part in a clinical study, join as an academic partner or become an advisor.
