More than 700 community leaders gathered in Ottawa to support timely, specialized care and research that turns promising ideas into effective treatment.

Hundreds of business, community and health-system leaders came together today for The Royal’s Leaders for Mental Health Breakfast, presented by TechInsights, raising $542,487 (and counting) to help more people access effective mental illness and addiction care.

The nineteenth annual event, and the first since the launch of The Royal’s $75-million Lives Reclaimed campaign, focused on two urgent goals: improving access to specialized care and accelerating research so more people benefit from treatments that work.

Guests heard how philanthropy is already improving access at The Royal, both through the adult general psychiatry program and the opening of the Minto Greenberg Urgent Care Clinic.

Every donation will improve access, outcomes, and ultimately help more people reclaim their lives from mental illness and addiction.

Improving access and outcomes

“In its first week, our urgent care clinic saw 60 patients. Half of those assessed showed a significant risk of suicide,” said Stephanie Carter, executive director of clinical services at The Royal. “Together we have made significant strides in making mental health care more accessible in eastern Ontario.”

The morning’s program also showed why access alone is not enough. Dr. Sara Tremblay, a scientist at The Royal’s neuromodulation research clinic, described how research embedded in care is helping personalize treatment for people whose depression has not responded to conventional approaches. “While accessing care is critical, the care must be effective for someone to truly reclaim their life from mental illness and addiction,” said Dr. Tremblay.

Personal stories, including Michael Leahey’s, brought the morning’s message into sharp focus. After being given just 30 days to live, Michael found a path toward recovery and today reflects on his experience saying, "I am a prime example of a life that's been reclaimed."

Every donation made through the breakfast supports Lives Reclaimed, The Royal’s campaign to improve access and outcomes for people living with mental illness and addiction.

“What you’ve heard this morning is what becomes possible when people can access care that works,” said Chris Ide, president and CEO of the Foundation at The Royal. “Every donation will improve access, outcomes, and ultimately help more people reclaim their lives from mental illness and addiction.”
