Forensic Unit Research Director and Research Ethics Board Chair at The Royal
I have two main research foci: The first is child sexual abuse prevention through more effective assessment and treatment methods for individuals who have perpetrated, and the development and evaluation of perpetration prevention programs. The second focus is forensic mental health, particularly the characteristics and service needs of people who have been found Not Criminally Responsible on account of Mental Disorder.
I am a Professor in Psychiatry at the University of Ottawa with cross-appointments to the School of Psychology at the University of Ottawa, the Department of Psychology at Carleton University, and the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto.
I am particularly proud of the two books that I have written on child sexual abuse prevention. The first book covered pedophilia and sexual offending against children (2008, second edition 2018) and the second book covered online sexual offending (2013, second edition 2025). These books summarize everything I have learned about these topics, and I am honored to know that they have been very positively reviewed and are considered essentials in the field. These are used in clinics and classrooms in Canada, the United States, and beyond.
My research has advanced our ability to respond to the global problem of child sexual abuse. Assessment tools I have developed are routinely used in clinical and correctional settings, my consultations with Big Tech companies have resulted in changes in policies and practices that have improved child safety online, and our findings about effective treatment and prevention have expanded the options that are available.
