The Royal is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Benoit Mulsant as interim chief of staff at The Royal, effective May 26, 2025.

Dr. Benoit Mulsant, Interim Chief of Staff at The Royal.

With more than three decades of experience in clinical care and academic leadership, Dr. Mulsant is widely recognized as one of Canada’s leading psychiatrists, with influence that extends across North America.

He was physician-in-chief at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) and is completing his second term as chair of the department of psychiatry at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Medicine. Dr. Mulsant holds the prestigious Labatt Family Chair in Biology of Depression in Late-Life Adults as well as being a clinician scientist with the Campbell Family Mental Health Research Institute.

His leadership roles at CAMH and the University of Toronto, combined with an extensive body of research in geriatric psychiatry and digital health innovation, have made him a respected voice in the field. He brings a systems-level perspective and a reputation for driving meaningful change.

Dr. Mulsant’s appointment comes at a pivotal time as The Royal embarks on the implementation of its new strategic plan. His interim role is part of a thoughtful transition guided by recommendations from a recently completed medical leadership review led by Dr. Jeffrey Turnbull which included extensive consultation with physicians and stakeholders.

Dr. Mulsant received his M.D. from Laval University, completed postgraduate training in Internal Medicine and Neurology at McGill University, and a psychiatry residency at the University of Pittsburgh. He also holds a Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence in Medicine from Carnegie Mellon University, underscoring his interest in innovation and digital transformation in health care.

Dr. Mulsant’s leadership will help lay the foundation for a stronger, more responsive system — one that improves access, fosters excellence, and advances The Royal’s mission to reclaim lives from mental illness and addiction.
