The focus of my research is on improving psychological treatments by boosting the brain’s capacity to learn. For depression, combining therapy with ketamine, a drug that promotes brain plasticity, could enhance effectiveness. For post-traumatic stress disorder, paying closer attention to bodily sensations when recalling traumatic memories may lead to better treatment results.
Over the past 30 years, several innovative trauma therapies have developed outside of traditional psychiatry. We have addressed the skepticism around these treatments by rigorously testing their effectiveness through scientific research.
Medications for mental health problems can work, but they can also be expensive and have unpleasant side effects. We need better, easier-to-access psychological treatments.
