About / Who We Are / The Royal

The Royal is a mental illness treatment, teaching and research hospital focused on patients with complex mental illness and addiction.

We provide treatment and support that lets patients remove the labels and barriers that mental illness forces upon them.

Vision

Lives reclaimed from mental illness and addiction.

Mission

We advance specialized care and strengthen our region’s capacity to help people with mental illness and addiction through treatment, research and education.

We see the person, not the illness.

The Royal combines mental illness care, advocacy, research, and education to help our patients live their lives away from the stigma and struggles of mental illness and addiction.

Innovation and discovery

The Royal brings together clinicians, scientists and technology to advance our understanding of the brain, discover new treatments and put them into practice faster. We are one of Canada’s top 40 research hospitals, working in different areas of mental illness, including mood disorders, stress and trauma, suicide prevention, military mental health and workplace mental health.

Philanthropy and community-building

Our foundation raises funds to support this critical work. Community leaders, families and mental health advocates work together to advance mental illness research and education, support top-quality patient care, and to advance discussion and community-building that breaks down stigma around mental illness. Our not-for-profit, arms-length fundraising organization is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors that is focused on open communication with donors and operating with strong fiscal integrity.

Treating and supporting people where and when they need us.

Multiple campuses serve different treatments where they are needed. We treat patients on our campuses and in the community. Our primary service area is Eastern Ontario, with some specialized programs that reach into Northern Ontario, Quebec and Nunavut.

A 188-bed state-of-the-art mental illness treatment hospital plus an 88-bed recovery/long-term care facility in Ottawa. This campus also includes dedicated research facilities and amenities for patients and families.

Our Brockville campus provides treatment to those convicted of a crime or found not criminally responsible for an act due to mental illness. It includes a 59-bed forensic treatment unit and 100-bed secure treatment facility. Brockville also offers community and outpatient programs such as geriatric outreach and the Flexible Assertive Community Treatment Team for Persons Dually Diagnosed (FACT-DD) team.

Our Community Mental Health Program provides specialized care, delivered by The Royal, outside of a hospital setting. Services include treatment in patients’ homes and other community locations. The program operates across eastern Ontario.

Satellite clinics in Ottawa, Kingston and Arnprior provide specialized mental health services for people living with psychological injuries related to services in the Canadian Armed Forces or the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Current members, veterans and their families can access the clinic's services.

For the first time, I feel I have a purpose. I am in control of my life.
