We are driven by the questions: What is our brain? How does it work? What is the self? In particular, we are interested in how our brains constitute subjective experience, as well as how that question intersects with psychiatric diagnosis and intervention as well as issues of neurophilosophy and neuroethics. Using neuroimaging techniques with healthy and psychiatric subjects, we search for brain mechanisms that underlie emotions and our sense of self. At the same time, we aim to investigate how the brain assumes a mind as reflected in the apparently perennial mind-brain/body discussion. Our research cuts across the disciplines of neuroscience, psychiatry, and philosophy. We are sure that such a transdisciplinary approach will open the door to a world of exciting findings that will shed new light on our very human self and our very human brain. We carry out our projects and investigations across various locations around the world. Our main research sites are Ottawa (University of Ottawa Institute of Mental Health Research) and Montreal (McGill University, Montreal Neurological Institute). These locations are complemented by collaborations in Europe (Berlin, Bochum, Bologna, Göttingen, Jülich, Magdeburg, Mannheim, Munich, Münster, Vienna, and Zürich), East Asia (Beijing, Hangzhou, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Tapei), and the Middle East (Tehran).
