The chicken or the egg: Connections between substance use and mental health and identifying ways of getting help.

Summary

The landscape of substance use in Canada is changing. Societal impacts of the opioid crisis and cannabis legalization are now ever-present discussions in the media and our daily conversations. A significant portion of our population is affected directly or indirectly by substance use and/or mental health difficulties. When does substance use become a problem and how is substance use connected with individuals' mental health? This presentation will help the audience:

  • Identify signs and symptoms of a substance use disorder;
  • Understand the overlap between substance use and mental health problems;
  • Understand the types of treatment for co-occurring substance use and mental health problems;
  • Learn more about how to access treatment.
